We’ve just made our fifth and final investment through Year One Labs. The startup is called Assemblio, founded by Jonathan Abrams and Elan Dubrofsky. Assemblio is in the event planning space; but we don’t have any additional details to share at this time.
We met Jonathan and Elan through the Google Hackathon that we ran in January 2011. That’s also where we met Dov and Mitch Amihod, two entrepreneurs that we also invested in.
Prior to the Hackathon, Jon and Elan had pitched us on a different idea. When they came to the Hackathon they worked on a separate idea completely (just for fun). And then as we got to know them and bounced things around, we all got excited about the potential behind Assemblio. Jonathan and Elan are from Ottawa, they’ll be moving to Montreal soon.
So looking back at our five investments to-date – Please Stay Calm, Localmind, HighScore House (previously called nCentives), the Amihods and Assemblio – three of our deals came from entrepreneurs outside Montreal.
Year One Labs always planned on creating five companies, and we’re now on our way to doing that. I’ve been thinking a lot about the lessons learned in going through this process and I hope to share a lot more in the near future.
